How to measure AI referral traffic in GA4

A practical, privacy-conscious way to check whether people arrive after clicking links in AI answers. You will verify observable visits, not claim that an AI cited your site.

Evidence boundary. A controlled URL with utm_source=chatgpt.com tests your analytics chain. It does not prove that ChatGPT recommended your website.

What you need

  • A website you control.
  • GA4 already installed, or logs that record the first request.
  • A separate test campaign that you can exclude from production reports.

1. Create a controlled test

Use a test page such as:

https://your-site.example/pricing?utm_source=chatgpt.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ai-referral-test

Open it in a new browser session and check the first request. The address bar alone does not prove GA4 received the values. Never put personal data or secrets in UTM parameters.

2. Check GA4

Start with Reports → Realtime. Then use Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and inspect the session source / medium and campaign that the property actually received.

GA4's default channel group includes AI assistants, with examples such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. This does not represent Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Consent settings, privacy controls and Referrer-Policy can remove signals.

Read the GA4 default channel group documentation

3. Preserve a small evidence record

FieldExampleWhy
sourcechatgpt.comObserved UTM or normalized host
mediumreferralChannel context
campaignai-referral-testExclude controlled tests
landing_path/pricingPage that received the visit
evidenceutm / refererWhat was observed

Prefer a normalized referrer host over the full URL. Set a retention period and follow your consent notice and privacy policy.

4. Interpret the result

You may report observed UTM or Referer evidence. You may not report a hand-opened test as proof that ChatGPT recommended the site, or one visit as proof of business growth.
